new beginning

Hi guys,

sorry for neglecting you recently I have been so busy at work working full time, going back to uni on monday will mean more time to post as I will only be working two days a week.

So it's a new beginning, starting my second year of uni on monday and we have to have a project idea in mind for the 1st project of the year; innovative design. For once I actually feel inspired, which rarely happens to me before I've even started a project. I'm planning on basing my project on native american indian folklores from lots of different tribes including Cherokee, Makah and Navajo etc. Our project is meant to be based on something new, we are setting the trends rather than following them so I looked into Navajo prints to begin with and have found they have been in trend in Fashion for some time so I figure they will be in trend in interiors and giftware soon enough, which is what I am planning to design for.

I have also been researching other artists that base their work on folklore, not necessarily native american india folklore and legends but folklore's from all over the world. One artist that really stood out was Sanna Annuka and her amazing screen prints. Image below taken from her website : http://www.sanna-annukka.com/home/

sorry

I haven't blogged in a while I don't have internet at the moment in my new flat so fingers crossed I will have it within two weeks time which means I'll be to keep you up to date with what I am doing throughout the rest of the summer, which includes a couple of craft fairs and getting some ideas together ready for starting my 2nd year at uni! Last year went so fast, it's quite scary that Damien will be graduating this time next year and the same for me in two years time.
I've also scored myself a part time job in a lovely organic and health food store called Millies :) , about time, after applying for over 30 jobs in Leeds ha!
Anyways, you won't hear from me again for about another two weeks so I bid you farewell for now!

i went to the show last night, loved seeing some old faces, and i've been working on the designs i mentioned in my previous post, not sure if they are working out how i wanted them to though, remember they are meant to be for the top of kitchen chalk boards. any comments would be much appreciated.

so..

tonight i'm off to my old college to go and see the degree that i was on before i moved to Leeds, final show :) i'm quite excited actually, will be nice to see a few old faces too.
i'm also in the process of sending a design to a guy on ukhandmade, just need to wait until i get back to Leeds on thursday to use my scanner. He's looking for designs to go on kitchenware chalkboards so i'm thinking of using some of my house designs from my previous project and spruce them up a little, we shall see how it goes, fingers crossed!

i've also decided what my next project will be on.. i know i'm a little bit early but it's going to be based on surbubia and the classic street as i enjoy drawing little quirky houses so much it should be right up my street haha.

oh well toodle pip :)

finished!

oh yes summer is finally here, i'm finished uni until september :) handed all my project in on monday and should hopefully get my marks back for it in my tutorial on tuesday. I am actually quite pleased with it and would have loved to have done a lot more if only there had have been more time, however it's all done and dusted now so it's time to relax in my garden in the sun and 26 degree heat!

here's a couple of photos of how my work was set up for handing in.

neglecting

Sorry i've been neglecting my blog a little, so busy at uni with the current project. I think i've somehow managed to set myself too much work to do, probably because it's our last project of the year and we got to write our proposal for it ourselves. I've decided to attempt to design 3 gift wrapping papers, 3 cards, tags, an apron, tea towel, 6 final illustrations and an artist book... hmm not sure if it's going to happen with only a week and
a couple of days left before hand in.
Anyways here is a card design for someone moving into a new home, i'm not sure what colour to use for the frame around the design so some input would be great :) as well as here are some other designs i've done over the last couple of days.

Just practicing digitally colouring some of my drawings, as that is what i want to do for my final illustrations.
I'm beginning to get the hang of it, not as neat as i want it to be yet though, but practice makes perfect :)

dirty rotten cheater

So here's one of my drawings from my sketchbook for my current project, which I've based on domestic life. Not sure if I like it, but it could work if it's produced digitally :)

Also my two friends from back home are coming to Leeds today for the weekend, going to nandos for the first time ever ha.

p.s.

I need to make this.

Excitement! Myself and my boyfriend may have just landed ourselves a little job through the summer; screen printing for a lady who is starting up a business, not getting any hopes up though until everything is final. It would be pretty good though, getting paid for something we actually like to do. Fingers crossed.

I'm going to get on with some sketchbook work and try and devise a questionnaire to hand out to couples so i can get to know the nitty gritty details of their relationships.

a few bits and bobs...

I found a few photos of drawings from my artist book project and a random print i did of a bear which i intend to print onto some tote bags to sell when i eventually have some spare time, there's also some photos of jewellery i made during my elective before easter.

So i did a jewellery elective before easter at uni and i actually quite enjoyed it even though it involved me using proper tools like a saw haha. Anyways i took a different route and decided to try and bring a bit of textiles into it so i ended up knitting copper wire and also using a bit of string too, i based my whole idea on fishing nets. I'm quite happy with the outcome, the ring being my favourite, and the only piece i'd probably wear.

I have re drawn a picture from my sketchbook for my concept board and added a bit more colour and shading, i quite like it actually for once, anyways after having decided to finally utilise my scanner here it is :)

off to see remember me today, oh yes.

Tuesday, 6 April 2010

So today i've been doing a bit of drawing for my fmp for first year, it's based on couples and i'm going to construct a survey that couples can fill in about one another and about the little things they bicker about. Firstly i've just been drawing some couples in my sketchbook i'm trying some different drawing styles because i figure if i try as many as possibly i may eventually find one i'm truly comfortable with, so far i'm pretty happy with my little doodles.

It's funny how much your work can change over the course of a few years, my work style has changed with every project i have done recently ha.
Having just only handed my last project in for marking and unfortunately i haven't taken any photos of it as well as only just starting my final project for 1st year i am unable to post any photos of my own work so i thought i'd post some artists/illustrators work that truly inspire me. Some people are just wonderful!

Keren Taggar whose work can be found on her website http://www.kerentaggar.com/

Her work is absolutely beautiful I love how she combines subtle hints of colour and the use of different papers with her pencil drawings.

Sarah McNeil whose etsy shop you can find here http://www.etsy.com/shop/SarahMcNeil The intricate and delicate drawings she does are beautiful as well as cute I basically just love them!

classical antiquity

I've been working on a project at uni based around classical antiquity which for me has involved drawing and researching a lot of antiques rather than classical art. Everyone seems to be creating beautiful and ornate wallpaper designs, whereas I'm creating bold vinyl decals based around the idea of bringing the antiques into your own home without the cost. It's beginning to make me wonder am I doing it right?

Here's a few images I've traced on illustrator ready to laser cut into the vinyl.
